Saputara: history

Saputara is the only hill station in Gujarat. It sits at about 1,000 metres in the Sahyadri hills of the Dang district, close to the Maharashtra border.

The name means 'abode of serpents'. The Dang people, who have lived in these forests for generations, worship a serpent image on the bank of the Sarpganga river. The state developed Saputara as a planned hill resort after the 1960s.
