Matheran: history

Matheran was found in 1850 by Hugh Malet, the British collector of Thane, and developed as a hill resort soon after. The name means 'forest on the forehead' of the hills. It sits at about 800 metres.

The toy train from Neral was built in the early 1900s. Motor vehicles are not allowed in the town. Cars stop at Dasturi Naka, and from there you walk, ride a horse or take the shuttle train.
