Mahabaleshwar & Panchgani: history
Mahabaleshwar is the highest hill station in the Western Ghats, at about 1,350 metres. Its old temple marks the source of the river Krishna. The British made it the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency in the late 1820s.
Pratapgad fort, nearby, was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1656. Panchgani was founded in the 1860s and is known for its boarding schools. The area grows most of India's strawberries.
