Kanha & Bandhavgarh: history
Kanha, in the Maikal hills, was made a national park in 1955 and was one of the first Project Tiger reserves in 1973. It saved the hard-ground barasingha, a swamp deer, from extinction. Its sal forests and meadows are the kind of central Indian jungle that Kipling wrote about.
Bandhavgarh was the hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Rewa and became a national park in 1968. An old fort stands on the hill at its centre, and the park is known for a high number of tigers in a small area.
