Bhopal, Pachmarhi & Jabalpur: history
Bhopal takes its name from Raja Bhoja, who ruled in the 11th century. For more than a hundred years, from 1819, it was governed by four remarkable Begums. Near the city are two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Great Stupa of Sanchi, begun by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, and the painted rock shelters of Bhimbetka, some of them more than ten thousand years old.
Pachmarhi, the hill station of Madhya Pradesh, was first described by a British officer in 1857. It lies in the Satpura range at about 1,070 metres.
