Ujjain & Omkareshwar: history
Ujjain, on the river Shipra, is one of the seven holy cities and one of the four places where the Kumbh Mela is held. Its Mahakaleshwar temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The city is linked with King Vikramaditya and the poet Kalidasa, and ancient Indian astronomers measured time from here.
Omkareshwar, another Jyotirlinga, stands on an island in the Narmada. Maheshwar was the capital of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century and is known for its ghats and its saris.
