Dwarka & Somnath: history
In Hindu tradition Dwarka was the capital Lord Krishna built after leaving Mathura. It is one of the Char Dham and one of the seven holy cities. Adi Shankaracharya set up one of his four seats of learning here.
Somnath is honoured as the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries. The present temple was rebuilt after independence on the initiative of Sardar Patel and consecrated in 1951.
