Goa: history
Goa was ruled by the Kadamba kings and then the Sultans of Bijapur before the Portuguese captured it in 1510. They stayed for 451 years, until December 1961. Goa became a state of India in 1987.
The churches of Old Goa are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, finished in 1605, holds the relics of St. Francis Xavier.
