Diu: history

The Portuguese built a fort at Diu in 1535 and held the island for more than four hundred years, until December 1961. That history shows in its churches, its fort and its quiet lanes.

Today Diu is part of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, joined to the Gujarat coast by a bridge.
