Chittorgarh: history
Chittorgarh was the capital of Mewar for about eight hundred years. The fort covers a whole hilltop and is the largest in India by area.
It was besieged three times, in 1303, 1535 and 1568, and each siege ended with the defenders choosing death over surrender. After 1568 the capital moved to Udaipur. The fort is part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
