Vaishno Devi: history
The shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is a cave in the Trikuta hills above Katra. The goddess is worshipped there as three natural rock forms, the pindis.
By tradition the cave was found about seven hundred years ago by Pandit Shridhar, a devotee who was guided to it in a dream. Since 1986 the shrine has been run by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. The path from Katra is about 13 km.
