The US Virgin Islands: history
Denmark settled St. Thomas in 1672 and ruled the islands for nearly 250 years as the Danish West Indies. Sugar was grown by enslaved people until emancipation in 1848.
The United States bought the islands from Denmark in 1917. The people are US citizens, so American travellers do not need a passport. Most of St. John has been a national park since 1956. Cars drive on the left.
