Mexico: history
The Maya built great cities in the Yucatán. Chichén Itzá was at its height between about 600 and 1200 CE and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Aztecs founded their capital on an island in a lake in 1325. The Spanish conquered it in 1521 and built Mexico City on top.
Mexico won its independence in 1821. Cancún is much newer. It was planned as a resort and built from 1970 on an almost empty strip of sand.
