The Philippines: history
The Philippines is a country of more than 7,000 islands. Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521, and Spain ruled for over three hundred years. The islands are named after King Philip II of Spain. Manila was founded in 1571.
The United States governed from 1898, and the Philippines became independent on 4 July 1946. English is widely spoken.
