Tirupati, Madurai & Rameswaram: history
The hill temple of Sri Venkateswara at Tirumala was supported by the Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara kings, and is one of the most visited shrines in the world. Madurai was the capital of the Pandya kings. Its Meenakshi temple took its present form under the Nayak rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Rameswaram is one of the Char Dham and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. In the Ramayana tradition Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here. The town of Dhanushkodi, at the tip of the island, was destroyed by a cyclone in 1964.
