Rajasthan: history
Rajasthan was a land of Rajput kingdoms: Amber and Jaipur, Marwar with its capital at Jodhpur, Mewar at Udaipur, and Jaisalmer in the desert. Each built forts on hilltops and palaces below them.
Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, and Jaipur in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II as a planned city. Jaipur was painted pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales. The kingdoms joined to form Rajasthan after Indian independence.
