Mysore was the seat of the Wadiyar kings from 1399. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan ruled from nearby Srirangapatna until 1799. The present Mysore Palace was completed in 1912 after a fire destroyed the old one.
Ooty was developed in the 1820s by John Sullivan, a British collector, and became the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. Its mountain railway is a UNESCO World Heritage line. Coorg is the homeland of the Kodava people and has grown coffee since the 19th century.
