Kashi, Ayodhya & Prayagraj: history
Varanasi, also called Kashi, is one of the oldest living cities in the world. The present Kashi Vishwanath temple, a Jyotirlinga, was built in 1780 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar. At Sarnath nearby, the Buddha gave his first sermon.
Prayagraj stands at the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet the unseen Saraswati, and it hosts the Kumbh Mela. Ayodhya is honoured as the birthplace of Lord Rama. The Ram Mandir there was consecrated in January 2024.
