Sikkim & Darjeeling: history
Sikkim was a Himalayan kingdom ruled by the Chogyals from 1642. It became the 22nd state of India in 1975. Darjeeling was leased from Sikkim by the British in 1835 as a health resort, and tea was planted soon after. Its toy train, opened in 1881, is a UNESCO World Heritage railway.
Travellers on a foreign passport, including OCI card holders, need a permit to enter Sikkim, and some border areas such as Nathula are open to Indian citizens only. We arrange the permits.
