Himachal Pradesh: history
Shimla grew from a hill village into the summer capital of British India in 1864. The toy train from Kalka reached it in 1903 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage railway.
Manali takes its name from the sage Manu, and its wooden Hidimba temple dates from 1553. Dharamshala has been the home of the Dalai Lama since 1960. Dalhousie was founded in the 1850s. Himachal Pradesh became a full state in 1971.
