Kerala: history
Kerala traded spices with Arab, Roman and Chinese merchants for two thousand years. Vasco da Gama landed near Calicut in 1498, and the Portuguese, Dutch and British followed. Fort Kochi still has their churches, warehouses and the Chinese fishing nets.
British planters opened the tea estates of Munnar in the 1880s. The state of Kerala was formed in 1956. Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of India, lies just across the border in Tamil Nadu.
