Haridwar, Rishikesh & Mussoorie: history
Haridwar is one of the seven holy cities of Hinduism. It stands where the Ganga leaves the mountains and enters the plains, and it hosts the Kumbh Mela every twelve years.
Rishikesh, a little upstream, is known around the world for yoga. The Beatles stayed at an ashram here in 1968. Mussoorie, on the ridge above Dehradun, was founded by a British officer in the 1820s and is called the Queen of the Hills.
