America, coast to coast: history

Thirteen colonies on the Atlantic declared independence in 1776. Over the next century the country spread west. The first railway across the continent was finished in 1869, and the California Gold Rush of 1849 had already drawn people to the Pacific.

The idea of the national park began here, with Yellowstone in 1872. The Grand Canyon became a national park in 1919. Las Vegas was founded in 1905, and the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937.
