Bimini: history

Bimini is the part of the Bahamas closest to the United States, about 50 miles from Miami. Legend says the Spanish explorer Ponce de León came here looking for the Fountain of Youth. In the 1920s, when alcohol was banned in America, the island was a base for smugglers.

Ernest Hemingway lived and fished here in the 1930s. Martin Luther King Jr. visited in 1964 and worked on his Nobel Peace Prize speech. The Bahamas became independent in 1973. You need your passport.
