Assam & Meghalaya: history
The Ahom kings ruled Assam for about six hundred years, until the British took over in 1826. Tea was found growing wild here in the 1820s, and Assam became one of the great tea regions of the world. Kaziranga was protected in 1905 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to most of the world's one-horned rhinos.
Meghalaya, the 'abode of clouds', became a separate state in 1972. Its Khasi, Jaintia and Garo people trace family through the mother. Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on earth.
