Andaman Islands: history
The Andaman Islands have been home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The British set up a penal colony here after 1857 and built the Cellular Jail between 1896 and 1906. Freedom fighters were sent there, and the place was known as Kala Pani.
Japan occupied the islands from 1942 to 1945, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose raised the Indian flag at Port Blair in December 1943. Several places were renamed recently. Havelock is now Swaraj Dweep, Ross Island is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, and Port Blair is Sri Vijaya Puram.
